Her StoryThe girl who loves the game

Tanya is nine years old and lives in Old City, Philadelphia. She goes to General George A. McCall School, where she's a proud member of the school chess club.

She fell in love with chess early. She played her very first tournaments at age six, and she hasn't slowed down since — competing in events all across the city, testing herself against players of every age and level. When she isn't at a board in real life, you'll often find her playing online, squeezing in one more game.

Over the last couple of years she's stepped onto bigger stages: playing at the Pennsylvania state level, and this year, for the very first time, representing herself at Nationals for her age group. Every game is a chance to learn something new — and Tanya loves the learning as much as the winning.
